The much-awaited 69th National Film Awards has been announced. The Kollywood industry had pinned high hopes on winning some awards this year as well. Tamil cinema buffs were betting big, thanks to the likes of Jai Bhim, Karnan and Sarpatta Parambarai among a few.

However, these movies won no awards, leaving cinephiles dejected. Suriya won the Best Actor award last year for his performance in Soorarai Pottru. His fans were hoping that Jai Bhim would fetch an award in at least one category. Many were rooting for the hard-hitting portrayal by Manikandan and Lijomol Jose in the movie.

The film dealt with a pertinent issue and hence there were people who thought the attempt by director TJ Gnanavel would be appreciated in one way or the other. Dhanush-starrer Karnan, helmed by Mari Selvaraj, was another film that had high chances to impress the jury.

However, the movie, too, was ignored. It had noteworthy performances by a few actors and a remarkable theme that delineated the struggles of an oppressed community.

Another film that many thought would bag a couple of awards was Pa Ranjith's Sarpatta Parambarai. The film which was set in the north Madras backdrop boasts of enthralling performances by several actors. The movie also had an interesting screenplay and riveting music.

Kadaisi Vivasayi winning the Best Tamil Film award is perhaps the only respite for Tamil audience this year. Nallandi, who played the lead role in it, won a special mention as well. Yet, there are those who opine that the movie deserved more recognition. Kollywood fans have been taking to social media to express disappointment over how Tamil cinema has been ignored in the 69th National Film Awards.
