About National Film Awards

The National Film Awards stands as India's preeminent film award ceremony. Its inception dates back to 1954, and since 1973, it has been overseen by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an arm of the Indian government, in conjunction with the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Panorama.

Each year, a panel of national experts appointed by the government meticulously selects the recipients of these prestigious honors. The ceremonial presentation occurs in New Delhi, where the President of India confers the awards. This grand event heralds the commencement of the National Film Festival, featuring public screenings of the acclaimed winning films. These awards hold the distinction of not only recognizing excellence in Indian cinema as a whole but also commending the finest productions from diverse regions and languages across the nation. The accolades are a reflection of the cinematic achievements of the prior year.
