Alphonse Puthren’s Premam, which became a cult Mollywood film, turns six today. The movie, which depicted the three phases and romances of the protagonist George - at ages 16, 20 and 30 - is still considered as one of the path-breaking attempts of the South Indian film industry. Premam, which was equally loved by critics and audiences from all parts of India and all over the world, was later remade in Telugu under the same title. The film stars Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi, Madonna Sebastian, Anupama Parameswaran, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna Sankar and Siju Wilson in the lead roles. In total, Premam featured 17 debutant actors. On the sixth year since release, we take a look at six things you need to know about premam. Some of them set trends and others set records in the industry. Take a look:
No Trailer, No Teaser
The makers of Premam decided to keep the mystery of the film alive by not releasing any promo videos, including the teaser or trailer of the movie. This could've gone both ways, but instead of becoming a marketing failure, the strategy got people anxious to know more about the film, leading it to the status of cult.
More than ten times return at the box office
Anwar Rasheed produced Premam on a budget of Rs 4 crore, but the movie went on to collect a staggering Rs 60 crore at the Box Office. Premam was the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2015 and even after six years, it is the sixth all-time highest Malayalam grosser.
Great music too
Composed by Rajesh Murugesan, all songs from the movie connected well with the audience. Premam had nine songs and all of them were chart-toppers. The music also went on to sweep all major Malayalam film awards last year. The song Malare, from Premam, has more than 64 million views on YouTube. The track, sung by Vijay Yesudas and penned by actor Shabareesh Varma, also helped Vijay Yesudas bag the Best Singer award at almost all popular Malayalam movie awards ceremonies of 2015.
Bagged various awards
The film has won more than 35 awards in multiple award ceremonies and in different categories. At the 63rd Filmfare Awards South, Premam was nominated in seven categories, winning Best Female Debut (Sai Pallavi) and Best Male Playback Singer (Vijay Yesudas for ‘Malare’). At the 5th South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA), it received fifteen nominations and won seven awards, including the Best Actor Critics and Best Debut Actress for Nivin and Sai Pallavi respectively.
Accepted by Chennai moviegoers too
Premam went beyond expectations not only at the Kerala Box Office, but at the Chennai Box Office as well. The Nivin Pauly-starrer became the first-ever Malayalam movie to run for more than 250 days in Chennai. The movie was so popular that it was re-released in Chennai, setting another record as the first Malayalam movie to re-release in Tamil Nadu.
Broke records overseas
Premam was also released in the US and it broke records there too. The movie broke the record for the highest opening weekend gross, set by Drishyam. While Drishyam collected $70,000 in its first week, Premam went on to collect a whopping $97,000, as per the film's US Distributor. The US collection of the movie reached $150,000 within two weeks.
