Manmarziyaan is a film that resonates deeply with its fan base. The original soundtrack by Amit Trivedi received a lot of positive feedback from fans. It's been six years since the release of the Anurag Kashyap film, which grabbed eyeballs as the filmmaker took a departure from his usual fare in Bollywood. Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, and Vicky Kaushal play the lead roles in the film, which released on September 14, 2018.
In Manmarziyaan, a young woman named Rumi (Taapsee) has feelings for a DJ named Vicky (Vicky). Eventually, Rumi's family finds out and starts pressuring them to tie the knot. If Vicky does not appear with his parents to ask for Rumi's hand in marriage, she will marry anyone her family picks, according to a commitment she makes to her family. But Vicky, who is frightened and immature, gets the willies time and time again. She finally accepts her forced marriage to Robbie (Abhishek), a respectable and grown-up banker, after she gives up on him. Even though Rumi says yes to the proposal, she still refuses to tie the knot the night before the ceremony because she thinks Vicky has changed. But he changes his mind once more.
The next day, Robbie and Rumi tied the knot, and slowly but surely, she began to relax around him. Vicky eventually shows up to inform Robbie about his relationship with Rumi. She expresses her desire to remain married to him while he keeps telling her that she has a choice. The following day, Vicky and she had an intimate encounter. After following her suspiciously, Robbie sees Rumi with Vicky. He is devastated when he finds out that his wife cheated on him. When Rumi enquires about his feelings for her, Robbie tells her that Vicky and she deserve each other. The following day, Robbie seeks nullification from marriage. Meanwhile, Rumi comes to terms with the fact that her heart belongs to Robbie and that Vicky was never "husband material" for her. Vicky reluctantly leaves Rumi, while Robbie and she attend a court appearance and sign their documents. While they're on the road, Rumi addresses Robbie's questions, and in the end, they make up because he forgives her.
Critical reception for Manmarziyaan was good, with acclaim going to the film's modern spin on a love story and the actors' outstanding turns. It was also popular because of the plot-fitting music and a 155-minute love triangle.
Manmarziyaan did well in theatres, as on its first day, it made Rs. 4 crore. On Sunday, the film's revenues increased by Rs. 5.70 crore, and a total of Rs. 40.39 crore was the film's global gross.
Interestingly, the official title of the film was Husband Material, and it premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Picture Festival in September before having a restricted international release.
Manmarziyaan is available to stream on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) and Eros Now.
