Kannada cinema’s magical composer Arjun Janya revealed the first teaser of his directorial debut 45 on the occasion of Ugadi. While his choice of cast – Shivarajkumar, Upendra and Raj B Shetty – ensured that the film had a great buzz going for it from the word go, now that he has shown the world a few fleeting visuals, excitement and intrigue has peaked and how. Arjun has revealed precious little about the film, but the colour palette he’s chosen for the 3 leads, he admits, is integral to the narrative.
Shivarajkumar’s first shot has him burst through a cloud of yellow, Upendra gets red, while Raj has a mix of greyish undertone. Then comes Shivarajkumar’s narration that the Love one showers on a deceased person, ought to be shown while he/she is still alive and a recreation of the song from Om with new lyrics – I’ll kill him, you must save him. There’s precious little that Arjun lets slip about the film, but he admits that mixing philosophy with entertainment is at the heart of the narrative.

The visuals, including the VFX shots that Arjun got done by a Canada-based firm, were, no doubt, the highlight of the teaser. According to the composer-filmmaker, the film’s title comes from the fact that the story spans a 45-day time period. He also revealed that the film blends contemporary storytelling with the philosophical essence of Sanatana Dharma, merging mythology with modernity, but without ever being preachy. Entertainment remains the buzzword, he said.
The idea behind the teaser, he had told media outlets, was to create intrigue and on that count, Arjun has succeeded and how. 45 is the film that Shivarajkumar had wrapped up before leaving to the US for his cancer treatment last year. And yet, the film will be in theatres only in August, given the extensive post-production work required. About 40% of the visuals of the film involves VFX work, Arjun has said. The film will be released in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.
