After Jayasurya’s critically acclaimed Sunny that dropped directly on Amazon Prime Video, director Ranjith Sankar is ready with his next directorial, a campus romance titled 4 Years, which revolves around two characters – Vishal and Gayathri – essayed by Sarjano Khalid and Priya Prakash Varrier, respectively.

The movie, which had completed its shoot a few months ago, is now all set to hit theatres in November. Ranjith had filmed the movie extensively at his alma mater in Kothamangalam.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, the filmmaker said that though the movie revolves around two contrasting characters and their relationships in the four years of engineering college, he has also tried to showcase the ambience of current campuses post-pandemic.

“I have tried to place them in the current campus setting – 2022. I think the campus life now is extremely different from even a 2018 campus because the pandemic has brought about a huge change, positively and negatively. People are now more free and independent, and they are also more intimate. However, relationships don’t have too much depth. I have tried to capture that essence. Also, you cannot make a love story today without intimacy,” he said, adding that the audience would connect to the characters of Vishal and Gayathri in the sense that we were once them or we know people like them.

The movie, which is set to release on November 25, also marks Priya’s first full-length role as a protagonist in Malayalam and the actress had said that the movie was the “most creatively satisfying” project she had been part of in her career so far.

Though she has worked in Telugu and Kannada, she said because she was not familiar with those languages, she couldn’t give her inputs. “In this film, I was able to do it, especially because Ranjith sir gave me that space and said I could personalise the character. I could creatively give a lot of inputs about Gayathri and make a lot of changes when I wanted to,” Priya explained.
