After delivering a bone-chilling performance as a serial killer in Dahaad, Vijay Varma takes on a completely different role in the upcoming series Kaalkoot . The intriguing trailer of Kaalkoot opens with Vijay's character, burdened by the harsh realities of his jurisdiction, penning his resignation letter. His decision stems from the realization that he can no longer stomach handling the heinous crimes that plague society. The promo video hints at a gripping narrative with an acid attack on a young girl at its core. Kaalkoot delves into the pressing issues of victim-blaming attitudes and the glaring flaws within our criminal justice system, offering a timely and thought-provoking social thriller. Besides Vijay, the series stars Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Seema Biswas, Yashpal Sharma, Gopal Datt and Suzanna Mukherjee in key roles.

Kaalkoot starts streaming on JioCinema on July 27.

Maamannan:

Maamannan, the latest offering from filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, is a profound exploration of caste prejudice and societal complexities. The film follows the journey of Maamannan (Vadivelu), a two-time MLA from an oppressed class, who appears to be part of the ruling class but is far from being a ruler. As with Selvaraj's previous works, the movie presents a clear division between good and bad characters, guiding the audience through its narrative with visual and verbal cues. With its powerful commentary on societal disparities and a strong lead performance by Vadivelu, Maamannan deserves appreciation for its ability to engage and challenge the audience simultaneously. The movie stars Udhayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, and Keerthy Suresh.

Maamannan debuts on Netflix on July 27.

Appatha:

Filmmaker Priyadarshan, renowned for his diverse filmography, has a special knack for crafting unforgettable comedy movies. Now, brace yourselves for a delightful rollercoaster ride as he joins hands with a comedy legend — Urvasi. The trailer of Appatha promises a heartwarming family drama infused with sidesplitting humour. At the heart of the story is Urvasi, who portrays the titular role of an endearing elderly woman longing to reconnect with her son, settled in bustling Chennai, and who has seemingly forgotten his roots, including his beloved mother. To Appatha's surprise, her son extends an invitation for her to stay with him in Chennai. However, the twist lies in her son's unexpected motive; he wants her to babysit the family's pet dog during his vacation. The catch is that this four-legged family member happens to be an unruly and boisterous canine, striking fear into Appatha's heart as she grapples with her dog phobia. What could possibly go wrong?

Appatha premieres on JioCinema on July 29.

Kolla:

Debutant filmmaker Suraj Varma seemed to have hit the ball out of the park with this heist thriller. Judging from the trailer, Kolla revolves around two young women, Annie (Rajisha Vijayan) and Shilpa (Priya Prakash Varrier), who venture into the serene countryside with dreams of starting a beauty parlour. The warm welcome they receive from the locals seems promising, but appearances can be deceiving. As the plot thickens, the building they choose for their business becomes the centre of a crime scene, plunging the story into an intense investigative drama. "Kolla" takes audiences on a thrilling journey as they navigate the aftermath of the crime, uncovering secrets and unveiling unexpected twists.

Kolla starts streaming on Manorama Max on July 27.
