29 years ago, Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala starred in the film Guddu. The film, directed by Prem Lalwani and written by Abrar Alvi, is a romantic drama film from 1995 that also starred Mukesh Khanna, Mehmood, and Deepti Naval in supporting roles. Guddu plot summary
Guddu (SRK) was born to the wealthy and prosperous Advocate Vikram (Khanna) and Kavita (Naval). Kavita is a very religious and devoted Hindu, but Vikram does not believe in God. There is love between Guddu and Salina Gupta (Koirala). Salina loses her sight in an accident they had while travelling one day. Not only does Guddu take the guilt, but so do Salina's guardians. They advise Guddu not to contact Salina. While Salina acknowledges that Guddu was not at fault in the accident, she still prefers not to meet him because she does not want to be a burden.
Guddu overhears his father's family doctor telling him that his father has a brain tumour and that he only has a few months left to live. He is considering donating his eyes to the hospital so Salina can receive them, but his father is completely against the idea. When Guddu decides to take his case to court, demanding his right to give his eyes, things take a turn for the worst, and both he and his father end up in the hospital. Kavita resolves to fast for five days without water because the trauma of her husband's illness and her son's condition is too much for her to endure. Her son's operation went well; her husband is spared life; and her prayers have been heard. She passes away while praying at God's feet, and Salina receives her eyes as a gift. After marrying, Salina and Guddu had twins, and they're happily ever after.
Audience reception
Upon its release, the plot of Guddu failed to strike a chord with viewers. Despite its promising premise—a love tale unfolding against the background of religious tensions—the film fell flat with audiences. Inconsistent character development, slow pacing, and a dearth of intriguing plot points all contributed to the film's lacklustre reviews.
As an actor, Shah Rukh Khan has proven over and over that he can pull off a wide range of roles. However, Guddu didn't do anything to advance his career or set it apart from his earlier classic movies; both critics and viewers panned it for being underwhelming.
Comparison to Shah Rukh Khan's other films
Among SRK's many films are both box office successes and critical darlings. In comparison to his other significant works, Guddu is not up to par in terms of overall quality, performance, or popularity.
Interestingly, SRK and Koirala collaborated on Guddu before the 1998 Mani Ratnam film, Dil Se.., which is still beloved by audiences worldwide.
