Only one of the films Ajay Devgn and Kajol have collaborated on does not feature them opposite each other. Yes, Dil Kya Kare, the Prakash Jha directorial, is a 1999 drama film featuring the real-life couple alongside Mahima Chaudhry and Chandrachur Singh. Today, the film has completed 25 years of its release. Ajay's parents, Veeru and Veena Devgan, produced Dil Kya Kare. Jatin-Lalit composed the music for the film, which is renowned for its twisted premise.
In Dil Kya Kare, Anand (Ajay) and Kavita (Mahima) are devoted parents to their adopted daughter Neha (Akshita Garud). Soon after Neha leaves school, a mysterious woman named Nandita (Kajol) approaches her and shows an unhealthy obsession with her life. The woman's devotion to her child is what convinced Kavita to employ her as a babysitter. However, Kavita's world turns upside down when she discovers that the woman is actually Neha's birth mother and Anand her biological father.

Earlier in an interview with Pinkvilla, Mahima had recalled that she met with a massive accident during the shoot of Dil Kya Kare. The actor shared that nobody even offered to drive her to the hospital when she was on the verge of death. Her mother and Ajay didn't show up until after they had already arrived at the hospital, and then they left to talk. The fear washed over the actor as she stood up and looked in the mirror. Her surgery removed 67 shards of glass.
Mahima went on to say that she had a number of film projects planned for that period, but she had to let some of them go. The actor wished no one would find out, because, back then, nobody was very encouraging.
