21 years have passed since the release of Koi... Mil Gaya, and for obvious reasons, the film continues to have a huge fan following. Rakesh Roshan wrote, directed, and produced the science fiction drama, which stars Hrithik Roshan, Rekha, and Preity Zinta. Sachin Bhowmick, Honey Irani, and Robin Bhatt co-authored the screenplay alongside Roshan. On its 20th anniversary, Koi... Mil Gaya was re-released on the big screen, and many thronged to theatres to watch. In case you missed it, you can revisit the blockbuster on ZEE5 (also available on OTTplay Premium).

Koi... Mil Gaya plot overview

The protagonist of Koi... Mil Gaya is Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan), a guy with developmental disabilities who uses the supercomputer belonging to his late father, Sanjay (Rakesh Roshan), to communicate with an alien being who identifies as Jadoo. The film chronicles his falling in love with his friend Nisha (Preity Zinta).

In the film, a young man with developmental disabilities attempts to continue his father's work of communicating with extraterrestrial beings from space, leading to an extraordinary and remarkable outcome. The alien becomes friends with Rohit, a young man with a mental disability. However, once the authorities discover it, they immediately seek it out. Who knows? Maybe Rohit can save his extraterrestrial companion.

Creation and collaboration

Roshan desired to reunite with his son Hrithik for a new project after the commercial and critical triumph of the romantic drama Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000). At the 2nd IIFA Awards in June 2001, he won Best Director for Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. It was then that he revealed his second film. Rajesh Roshan, Roshan's brother, created the film's score and soundtrack. Craig Mumma and Mark Clobe, two American artists, invested ₹4 crore in its visual effects.

Koi... Mil Gaya was the initial instalment of the Krrish franchise and was released on August 8, 2003. It was shot on a budget of ₹35 crore. Parents and children were the intended recipients of the campaign's "You Are Not Alone..." slogan.

Box office success and critical acclaim

With a total of ₹82.326 crore, it was the second-highest-earning Indian film of the year. The critical reaction was good for the picture, with compliments mostly focused on the acting. Two more installments, Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013), followed.

Koi... Mil Gaya grabbed three National Film Awards, including one for Best Film on Other Social Issues, among its many accolades.

One of the first Indian features to showcase extraterrestrials, Jadoo is now considered a classic in its field. Following Jadoo's success, J Bole Toh Jadoo (2004) emerged as a spin-off series.
