2023 has been an excellent year for the Malayalam cinema. As always, the industry produced highly celebrated films, that excelled in all the aspects, including the makings and performances. Along with the massive critical acclaim, Malayalam cinema has also some real money-spinners, that performed extremely well at the box office and pushed all commercial boundaries of the industry.

2018

The survival drama, which is based on the real-life Kerala floods of 2018, emerged as the both the biggest blockbuster of 2023, as well as the all-time highest grosser of the Malayalam film industry. The Jude Anthany Joseph directorial made total gross collection of Rs. 177 crore at the worldwide box office. While considering the pre-release business, the movie crossed the 200-crore mark, thus emerging as the all-time biggest commercial success of the industry.

RDX

Another highly surprising entry into the list. RDX, which features Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese, and Neeraj Madhav as the titular characters Robert, Dony, and Xavier respectively, hit the theatres without much of a big pre-release hype. However, the Nahas Hidayath directorial emerged as the second highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2023, making a total gross collection of over Rs. 100 crore at the worldwide box office.

Kannur Squad

The crime thriller, which is based on a real-life investigation, emerged as the third highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2023. Mammootty played the central character ASI George Martin in the movie and also bankrolled the project under his home banner Mammootty Kampany. Kannur Squad which also marked the directorial debut of cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj, also emerged as the sixth all-time highest-grossing film of the industry.

Romancham

The fourth place in this list is bagged by Romancham, the horror comedy-drama helmed by Jithu Madhavan. The project, which was released with minimal hype, emerged as a surprise blockbuster and made a total worldwide gross collection of over Rs. 70 crore within its lifetime run. The project, which featured Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan in the lead roles, also emerged as the first blockbuster of 2023 from Malayalam cinema.

Neru

Even though the Mohanlal starrer has not officially entered the 50-crore club yet, the box office collections and increasing audience rush suggest that Neru is set to emerge as the fifth highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2023. The Jeethu Joseph directorial has already entered the 25-crore club with its Kerala box office collections and has crossed the 30-crore mark at the worldwide box office. With the upcoming weekend, the project is expected to enter the 50-crore club of the industry and fifth highest grosser of the year.
