SonyLIV on Monday confirmed the digital premiere of Malayalam cinema's biggest blockbuster yet, 2018 . The movie, starring Tovino Thomas, will become available for streaming on the platform on June 7, just over a month after its initial release in cinemas.
2018 had a quiet theatrical release on May 5. The movie was released across the country on a limited number of screens as if the filmmakers never had a clue about the movie's box office potential. The movie soon started garnering positive reviews and terrific word of mouth ensured the movie's massive success at the box office against all odds.
2018 has already become the highest-earning Malayalam movie globally with a whopping Rs 160 crore in global ticket sales. To cash in on the momentum, the filmmakers also released the movie last week in multiple languages across the country.
However, the film's box office potential may not be fully realized due to contractual obligations with the streaming platform. Reports suggest that the producers had initially considered postponing the digital release of the film to a later date. In response, the streaming platform expressed willingness to negotiate the terms but requested a re-evaluation of the selling price. Apparently, the producers were not willing to compromise on the previously agreed-upon price and opted to proceed with the early release date.
The producers clearly underestimated the potential of 2018, inspired by the real-life events in Kerala. The movie is on a record-setting spree since its release. It has already raked in over Rs 80 crore in Kerala alone. If the movie continues its bullish run it could also become the first movie to cross the Rs 100 mark at the Kerala box office.
Written and directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film also stars Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Narain, Lal, Indrans and Aju Varghese.
