The Malayalam movie 2018, starring Tovino Thomas, is making waves at the box office with its depiction of real-life events during the devastating floods that hit Kerala in 2018. Despite a soft start with no significant marketing, 2018 has gained momentum through word of mouth and is now drawing crowds to cinemas in Kerala, with many shows going houseful.
In Bengaluru, the demand for the movie has surged, resulting in more shows being scheduled after the initial release with fewer than 30 shows.
"#2018Movie - Surreal Demand in Bengaluru plexes. Thanks to the success of other recent releases such as Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 2 and Fahadh Faasil starrer Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, the box office in Kerala is experiencing a surge, and 2018 is adding to the ongoing momentum. According to reports, the movie earned close to Rs 2 crore on its opening day in Kerala and surpassed Rs 5 crore in gross collections by Saturday. The trade sources are predicting a significant jump in collections on Sunday.
Besides Kerala, 2018 is also gaining traction in the UAE. This disaster movie is proving to be a powerful depiction of the heroism of ordinary people during one of the country's biggest calamities, and its success shows the power of good word of mouth.
Written and directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, besides Tovino Thomas, the movie also stars Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Narain, Lal, Indran and Aju Varghese.
