It's been 20 years since Sanjay Leela Bhansali's timeless classic Devdas was released. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Paro, and Madhuri Dixit-Nene as Chandramukhi. The epic romantic drama film was produced by Bharat Shah and hit the big screens on July 12, 2002.
On the occasion of 20 years of Devdas, the official social media pages of Bhansali Productions shared a series of unseen character posts of SRK, Aishwarya, and Madhuri. The poster gives out an old-world charm, which was the theme of Devdas.
The post was captioned as "Devdas is mystical. Devdas is melancholic yet poetic. Devdas is a character and a film so special that it sparks love, longing, and romance within us even today... Devdas, 20 years later still stands for all this and a lot more! Here’s celebrating #20YearsOfDevdas #SanjayLeelaBhansali @iamsrk @aishwaryaraibachchan_arb @madhuridixitnene @shreyaghoshal."
The story of Devdas is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 novel of the same name. The plot revolves around Devdas Mukherjee (Shah Rukh), a wealthy law graduate who returns from London to marry his childhood friend Parvati, aka Paro (Aishwarya). But his spiral into drunkenness and subsequent emotional degeneration prompts him to seek sanctuary with the kind-hearted courtesan Chandramukhi (Madhuri) after his own family rejects their marriage.
Back in 2003, Devdas won five National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Shreya Ghoshal won Best Playback Singer – Female for the Bairi Piya song. Nitin Chandrakant Desai won Best Production Design. Neeta Lulla, Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla, and Reza Shariffi won Best Costume Design. And finally, Saroj Khan won the Best Choreography Award for Dola Re Dola.
Devdas is the only film wherein SRK and Madhuri worked with Bhansali. While Aishwarya and the filmmaker have collaborated on Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Guzaarish.
