1996 Dharmapuri, a rustic rural drama, presented by leading choreographer Sekhar master, released in theatres earlier this April. The film starred Gagaan Viharri and Aparna Devi in lead roles and was directed by Jagath. The drama, bankrolled by Bhaskar Yadav Dasari under Bhaskara Group of media, earned impressive reviews upon release. Akhanda Naga Mahesh, Palasa Janardhan, Keshava Sanam and Bus Stop Koteswararao form the supporting the cast of the film.
Telugu OTT platform aha acquired its streaming rights and premiered the film this weekend (i.e. December 2). The story revolves around a happy-go-lucky, arrogant youngster Suri and a ferocious woman Malli, who hail from poor backgrounds in Dharmapuri in Telangana. While they fall in love eventually, Malli's mother doesn't like Suri and don't want them to get together. Malli's mother takes help of Laxmi Rajyam Patel, Suri's foster father's political opponent to solve her issue.
Village politics turn out to be a major roadblock in the love story of Malli and Suri. While Suri's foster father advises him against the marriage, the couple defy all odds and tie the knot. After their marriage, Suri's mysterious disappearance, right on their wedding day, scares the daylights out of the villagers. Is Suri alive? How will his appearance affect Malli's life? Will the sarpanch be of any help? This forms the crux of 1996 Dharmapuri.
The film has music by Osho Venkat and is edited by Marthand K Venkatesh. With dance choreography by Sekhar master, the film has cinematography by Krishna Prasad. Nallareni Kalladhaanaa, a number sung by Armaan Malik, was a hit with music buffs.
