Thanmathra is an addition to the list of Mohanlal's timeless and remarkable films. He blends into the central role, Ramesan Nair, with ease and gives a powerful performance that heightens the film's poignant mood. Nobody watching could have avoided feeling sympathy for Ramesan and shedding a tear for him.

Blessy’s art of storytelling

Instead of adding multiple subplots to complicate the script, Blessy has presented a straightforward narrative about Ramesan Nair and his family. He has done an excellent job of capturing the hopes of a middle-class family and their resilient response to an unforeseen event. There are some similarities between this movie and Blessy's Kaazhcha, which starred Mammootty and Padmapriya, in terms of the storytelling technique and emotional elements.

Before Thanmathra's release, Malayalis may not have known much about Alzheimer's disease and its adverse consequences. This is a sensitive subject that the director has managed to handle with tact, enticing empathy in the viewer without going overboard with the intricacies of the condition. In a recent interview with the media, Blessy expressed his happiness at having tried to raise public awareness of Alzheimer's disease.

Thought-provoking conversations

The warmth of the parent-child bond is key to the progress of Thanmathra. A few moving scenes convey the bond between the characters. For example, Ramesan having a mature conversation with his son about infatuation. In another scene, Ramesan speaks to other parents about the value of gentle parenting and spending quality time with their children to understand their thoughts and dreams.
