Ashta Chamma, the modern-day adaptation of author, playwright Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, that released exactly 15 years ago, heralded a new era in Telugu cinema. The success of the Mohana Krishna Indraganti directorial gave several minds the courage to come up with small-budget, concept-driven films, try something new and make their mark in the industry.

The drama introduced Nani (who was an assistant director and an RJ back then) and Srinivas Avasarala as actors, and the rest as they say, was history. The film’s lifeline was of course the performance of Swathi Reddy as Lavanya. Commemorating 15 years of the film’s release, the team of Ashta Chamma came together for a reunion at Nani’s residence yesterday night.

The reunion was graced by the core team of Ashta Chamma, including Nani, Srinivas Avasarala, Swathi Reddy, Jhansi, Tanikella Bharani, director Mohana Krishna Indraganti, composer Kalyani Malik, cinematographer PG Vinda and others. “Just like that 15 years.. always happy to recall those golden sweet memories. a big thank you to our dear @NameisNani for this memorable reunion,” producer Nimmakayala Prasad wrote.

A prop was designed with the title font of the film exclusively for the occasion and the team was in a joyous mood, going by the pictures shared by the celebs on social media. Ashta Chamma won three awards on the whole - two of them for Swathi’s performance (Nandi award and Filmfare) and it was adjudged the ‘Best Home-viewing Feature Film’ (Nandi) as well. Suresh Babu presented the film.

The story of Ashta Chemma revolves around the protagonist Lavanya’s marriage. The latter’s aunt wants to get her niece married to an NRI, though Lavanya is crazy about actor Mahesh Babu. However, Lavanya budges and agrees to marry any potential bridegroom whose name is Mahesh. One of the film’s actors Bhargavi had committed suicide after the release of the film.
