There is probably no other Indian film than director Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam that has spawned as many remakes. The sequel of the director’s 2013 movie, starring Mohanlal, too has had its fair share of remakes in Telugu, Kannada and others in the offing including the one with Ajay Devgn in Hindi. Now, if everything goes to plan, Jeethu’s next film 12th Man too could be kicking off another set of remakes.
12thMan, which again has Mohanlal in the lead, is a multi-starrer whodunit that is set to release on Disney+ Hotstar on May 20. The film revolves around a group of friends and their wives, who arrive at a bungalow for a party and is in lines with Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes books, according to the director.
In a recent interview with First Post, the director talked about the remake plans of the film, saying that the rights of the story are with Bollywood producer Sunir Khetarpal, who had worked with him in The Body, and if the reception of 12thMan is positive, it will be remade in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
In an exclusive interview with OTTplay a few days ago, Jeethu had also told us that Sunir was the one who shared the basic idea of 12th Man. “Krishnakumar KR then proceeded to develop its screenplay. It took almost two years to complete and wasn’t an easy film to write. The audience would understand why when they watch the movie,” said Jeethu.
The film also has Sshivada, Saiju Kurup, Anu Mohan, Leona Lishoy, Priyanka Nair, Unni Mukundan, Anu Sithara, Anusree, Chandunath, Rahul Madhav and Aditi Ravi as part of its cast. The director had also told us that every character in the movie has equal prominence as that of Mohanlal’s, and the film’s script is structured that way to show their importance.
