In the last few years there has been a rapid increase in digital content and content creators. Well, Malayalam content creators have also jumped on the bandwagon and given us some of the most entertaining, relatable and gripping web series.

1. Instagraamam - YouTube

Mridul Nair’s Instagraamam claims to be the first full-fledged web series in Malayalam with a cast of over 60 actors- including mainstream actors like Sunny Wayne, Deepak Parambol, Ganapathy, Ramesh Pisharody Alencier, Aditi Ravi and Saniya Iyappan. The series is well known for its movie-quality making as well as excellent performance from all the actors. The first season consists of 14 episodes, each under 30 minutes.

2. Kili - YouTube

Starring Aju Varghese, RJ Mathukutty, Sreejith Ravi, Karthik Shankar, Anand Manmadhan, Vishak Nair (Anandam), and Vishnu Govindan, Kili claims to be the most expensive web series in Malayalam. Directed by Vishnu Govindan, the comedy web series talks about the pandemic, lockdown and how the life of different characters in the series is affected by it.

3. Thera Para - YouTube

From one of the best digital content creators in Kerala, Thera Para follows the life of four young jobless friends living together in a town and the problems they face. This web series by Karikku is filled with humor and gripping content. Directed by Nikhil Prasad, Thera Para is one of the most watched Malayalam web series on YouTube.

4. Scoot - YouTube

After their hit web series, Thera Para, this fun and entertaining web series from Karikku follows two young men working in an IT company. They are not satisfied with their work and decide to build a turf to get away from this job. The show revolves around the series of events that follow this decision.

5. Plus Two Class- YouTube

Plus 2 is yet another relatable and fun mini web series from Karikku. Following the fun events that occur in a school, Plus Two class takes us back to our school life with quirky and unique content. The web series has the same cast as other Karikku titles and was released after their well-received Plus Two Free Period YouTube short film.

6. Othalanga Thuruthu - Youtube

Written and directed by Ambuji BCM, Othalanga Thuruthu is a fun story that takes place in a fictional island where the natives consider the Othalanga (a vegetable) to be poisonous. The series stars Abin Bino, Jayesh Janardhan and Jagadeesh Kumar in lead roles.

7. Meenaviyal - Youtube

Starring Archana Kavi and Arun Kurian, Meenaviyal is a simple and entertaining web series that shows the beautiful love-hate relationship between siblings. Amrita, played by Archana, is a psychologist who has an easy-going silent character while her brother is the exact opposite. Watch them get through different events in their life in Meenaviyal.

8. Mom and Son - YouTube

Mom and Son is a Malayalam webseries on YouTube, written and directed by Karthik Shankar. He also plays the lead role as the son. The web series’ cast includes his mother, father and uncle. Named as a ‘lockdown comedy’, the story revolves around the fun incidents and conversations between a mother and her son.

9. M.E.N.E.K.A - Manorama Max

With a total of 9 episodes, this crime thriller with the tagline ‘A perfect crime story’ is completely different from all the fun web series in this list. Starring Ashwin Kumar, VK Sreenivas, Megha Thomas, and Bilas are in the lead roles, the series is a detective story about investigators struggling to catch a man who has announced on live television that he will commit seven perfect murders in seven days.

10.Rock Paper Scissors - YouTube

Yet another entertainer from the house of Karikku, Rock Paper Scissors is an urban comedy thriller produced by Karikku Fliq. The web series revolves around three girls who are staying together in an apartment in Kochi and all the little witty moments that occur in their life. Directed by Adithyan Pradeep Chandrashekar, this web series was an immediate superhit.

11. Utsaha Ithihasam – Zee5

Utsaha Itihihasam is a Malayalam web series that won the best Dramedy Award at the Seoul Webfest. It was also one of the crowd favourites among the international audience at the webfest. The story revolves around the life of Nitin and Kristo, who help each other out in times of trouble.

12. Lockdown Aparatha- Youtube

Set in the backdrop of the pandemic and the lockdowns that were imposed following it, Lockdown Aparatha is a humorous take on the situation. The web series was released on another popular Malayalam YouTube channel – Premier Padmini. Directed by Anoop Bahuleyan, the web series stars popular comedy actors Nobi, Azees Nedumangad and Akhil Kavalayoor and revolves around the funny incidents of a few friends when they spend their time together during these lockdowns.
