Aanand L. Rai's Raanjhanaa made its big-screen debut 11 years ago. The romance drama that marked Dhanush's Bollywood debut has him playing an obsessive lover, Kundan, of Sonam Kapoor Ahuja's character Zoya. The film became a sleeper hit at the box office, and now, as it completes a milestone, you can stream it on JioCinema and ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium). Himanshu Sharma worked on the screenplay of the film, which also stars Abhay Deol, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Swara Bhasker in supporting roles. Irshad Kamil wrote the lyrics, while A. R. Rahman composed the score and music.

Raanjhanaa plot overview

In the film, the son of a Hindu pandit, Kundan, learns that his childhood beloved Zoya is hoping to marry the city-bred Akram (Abhay Deol). His unwavering goal, however, is to pursue her affection.

Dhanush's Kundan, the son of a pundit, immediately develops a crush on a girl. At first, people dismiss it as a silly crush, given their youth. Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) remains the object of the boy's affections even after all these years have passed. He escorts her to class, holds her hand, and endures constant slaps. She finally gives in to him because of his "consistency." The film moves to a different place when Zoya enrols in JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University), where we see the political and idealistic ethos of the school. As she faces and eventually falls for student leader Akram (Abhay Deol), she rediscovers a strength she had long since lost. Upon her long-awaited return to her hometown eight years later, Zoya discovers both familiar and surprising changes.

Characterisation

Talking about the characterisation, Dhanush's character is completely fixated on his native Banaras and Zoya. In it, he develops from a carefree adolescent into an emotionally intelligent adult. Childlike and unpredictable, Zoya can be icy and objective. She possesses all the qualities that men find attractive. On the other hand, Akram, a socialist and aspiring politician, is a confident but secure college student.

Raanjhanaa received rave reviews from critics and audiences upon its release.
