13 years of Mankatha: Ajith and Venkat Prabhu’s iconic film still rules the masses

Mankatha, the 2013 hit Tamil film headlined by actor Ajith Kumar, has turned 13. The film, which is written and directed by Venkat Prabhu, is one of the massive blockbusters in the actor's filmography and explored a different shade in his performance. Mankatha turns 13

Mankatha marked Ajith Kumar’s landmark 50th film. It released on August 31, 2011 and was written and directed by filmmaker Ajith Kumar in his first collaboration with the actor. Mankatha is an action drama, which opened to tremendously positive response upon its release, that it went on to become one of the celebrated films in both Ajith Kumar and Venkat Prabhu’s respective careers.

A heist thriller, Mankatha revolves around a suspended cop who gets to know a group who are aiming to steal a lumpsum amount from a gangster and promises to help them given he gets a share. At a time when superstars are skeptical about doing negative shades, Ajith's portrayal of a corrupt police officer was not only a daring choice but also one of the highlights of the story that made it run for weeks together in theatres.

Mankatha has music scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja, a major plus point for the success of the film. It is to be noted that Mankatha went on to become so iconic, that director Venkat Prabhu who is expecting the release of The GOAT with Vijay, has inserted the reference of the Ajith-starrer in his upcoming film. Mankatha was re-released earlier this year to roaring response. It was produced by Cloud Nine Movies.
