Student of the Year launched the careers of three popular names in Bollywood. The 2012 Karan Johar directorial marked the silver screen debuts of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. As the film turned a decade old on Wednesday, Karan opened up about how the film helped him find three very important people in his life.

Taking to Instagram, Karan shared a video of the film, where the director is heard saying “Student of the Year to me is a celebration of everything I love about cinema. The youth, the zest, the zing, the music, the energy, the comic timing. Everything I love about Hindi cinema is a part of Student of the Year”.

In the caption, Karan opens up about his relationship between the three stars, revealing that, apart from his mother, they are the people he still talks to every day. He talked about how the film had started off as an attempt to make a fun and entertaining holiday him, but which ultimately gave him three defining relationships. Saying that his first ever ‘protective parental instincts’ were for Alia, Varun and Sidharth, Karan declared that he loved the three wholeheartedly.

Interestingly, Karan had recently slammed the film during an episode of Koffee With Karan 7 which saw Sidharth on the couch. The director had relentlessly bashed the film, saying that the film ‘had no script and no scope for performance’. He even went so far as to say that he might have had been drunk when they had filmed the movie.

Student of the Year, which also starred Rishi Kapoor, Sana Saeed, Ronit Roy, Sahil Anand, Ram Kapoor and Farida Jalal, is available for streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The film also spawned a sequel starring Tiger Shroff, which marked the onscreen debuts of Tara Sutaria and Ananya Pandey.
