Manjummel Boys follows a bunch of friends from Kerala as they head to Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu for a short trip. They also visit Gunaa Caves in Kodaikanal but sneak into an area that is not open to the public. The scenes of merriment suddenly change as one of them, Subhash (Sreenath Bhasi), falls into an abyss in the cave and the rest of the friends scurry to get help.
Chidambaram’s film then follows these friends as they desperately seek help from the police, locals and firefighters to bring back their buddy. Manjummel Boys is also an ode to friendship as the group refuses to leave their friend even when the police and locals warn them that no one has been rescued alive from Gunaa Caves, known as The Devil's Kitchen, up until then. The plot also expertly weaves in other aspects of their childhood, their zest for tug-of-war contests and more.
The stellar performances of Soubin Shahir, and Sreenath Bhasi, along with Deepak Parambol, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi, Khalid Rahman, and Chandu Salimkumar, and the emotional bond they share will make you root for the characters.
Another major factor that worked in favour of the movie, lifting the cinematic experience to a whole new level, is the song Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan from the Kamal Haasan-starrer Gunaa. For the unversed, the song from the 1991 Tamil movie was also shot at the same location, and hence came to be known as Gunaa caves. The makers of Manjummel Boys have used the song in key situations, that deeply resonated with the audiences.
The film checks almost all boxes with Sushin Shyam’s stellar music and Shyju Khalid’s impressive cinematography ensuring that Manjummel Boys remains a standout movie from Malayalam in recent times. Despite any flaws it may have, Chidambaram’s earnest survival thriller connected with the audience in a big way.
Watch Manjummel Boys on JioHotstar and relive the exciting adventure of the Malayalam movie.
