Born in Maharashtra, British India, on November 4, 1845, Vasudev grows up in a farming community of Shirdhon near Kalyan. After completing his education, he goes to work for the Finance Ministry but is enraged when he is refused permission to visit his ailing mother. He turns his rage against the British, who had recently crushed uprisings from Tatya Tope, Jhansi's Rani, and Mangal Pandey. He is forced to flee and don the guise of Kashikar Baba but faces betrayal by his very own people, is arrested, tried, found guilty, and exiled to Eden, Africa, where he will soon attempt to escape, then try and return home to continue his struggle against the British.
