Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale is a psychological drama film written by Samuel D. Hunter based on his 2012 eponymous play. The plot follows Charlie, a reclusive English writing course instructor suffering from morbid obesity, as he tries to mend his broken relationship with his estranged daughter Ellie, who he hasn't seen in eight years. Produced by Jeremy Dawson, Ari Handel and Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Brendan Fraser and Sadie Sink in the lead as Charlie and Ellie, respectively. The rest of the cast includes Ty Simpkins, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton and Sathya Sridharan. Distributed by A24 and with music by Rob Simonsen, the film is shot by Matthew Libatique and edited by Andrew Weisblum. The film premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival and, for his performance, Fraser won a Golden Globe Award, Critics' Choice Award and an Academy Award for Best Actor.
