The world is pressed against time to generate enough food by 2050 to feed nine billion people. Pesticides and GM crops increase the harvest but poison the soil and the food chain causing disastrous effects on health and ecology. Organic farming is the sustainable solution but it takes longer time to increase the harvest. Is taking the middle path, a mix of organic farming and research-driven GM crops the answer? In 2011, scarcity of wheat across nations led to the Arab Spring which uprooted existing regimes. Are we prepared to handle political unrest rising from food scarcity?
