"The Black Prince," a historical drama film released in 2017, directed by Kavi Raz, marks the acting debut of Satinder Sartaaj. The film narrates the life of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the final ruler of the Sikh Empire and the Punjab region, and his complex relationship with Queen Victoria.
The story unfolds with the young Duleep Singh ascending to the throne at the tender age of five after the passing of his father, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the former ruler of the Sikh empire. In 1849, as Punjab was annexed into British India, the young prince was dethroned and forcibly separated from his mother. He is placed under the guardianship of British surgeon Dr. John Login. At the age of 15, Duleep Singh is sent to England, where he crosses paths with Queen Victoria and a unique relationship forms between them.
Over time, Duleep Singh manages to re-establish contact with his mother, and he starts reconnecting with his Indian heritage. He harbours a deep desire to return to India to reclaim his kingdom, but the intricate web of British colonial politics consistently obstructs his efforts.
The cast includes Satinder Sartaaj as Duleep Singh, Amanda Root as Queen Victoria, Jason Flemyng as Dr. John Login, Ameet Chana as Aziz-Ud-din, Joe Egan as Ishris Reval, David Essex as Colonel Hurban, Madhurima Tuli as Young Maharani Jinda, Shabana Azmi as Maharani Jinda, and Keith Duffy as Casey.
