Rizwan Khan, a Muslim with Asperger syndrome moves to America after his mother's death to live with his brother Zakir and his wife. Despite his difficulties in social interactions, Rizwan falls in love with widowed hairdresser Mandira Rathod who has a son named Sameer from her previous marriage. They get married and the family adopts the Khan surname. All was well until the historic September 11 attacks took place and the American envrionment suddenly turned hostile to the family. Powered by islamaphobia, Sameer is killed in a bullying incident at his school. A devastated Mandira believes Rizwan and his surname caused of her loss and in a rage-filled moment sardonically asks him to tell the American people and the President of the United States that he is not a terrorist. Unable to grasp the scornful tone of her request due to his neurodivergence, Rizwan sets out on a journey to do exactly that.

This Hindi drama film was written by Shibani Bathija, produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment, and directed by Karan Johar for whom the film marked a departure from his usual straight-forward romantic dramas. My Name is Khan stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Zarina Wahab, Katie A. Keane, Jimmy Sheirgill, Sonya Jehan and Christopher B. Duncan in prominent roles. The subject matter, direction, music by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, screenplay, cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran, performances and social message were at the receiving end of much critical praise. The film eventually became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2010 and the second-highest-grossing Indian film of 2010. The movie bagged numerous Filmfare awards and nominations that year.
