Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, a 2001 movie, is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and is an adventurous and drama film. The movie not only cast Indian actors but foreign actors as well. The film is set in the 1890s in Champaner, during the British Raj. The movie revolves around a bet which can either let the villagers pay three times the Lagaan they are already paying, or exempted from paying for the next three years. A wager takes place between Bhuvan, played by Aamir Khan, and one of the enraged foreigners, who watches Bhuvan making fun of cricket. Bhuvan, being confident about the game, accepts the bet. While all the villagers think that they are going to lose the game and everything they have when they have to pay triple Lagaan (agricultural tax), Gauri and Bhuvan’s mother are the only ones to support him. Towards the end of the movie, Elizabeth, played by Rachel Shelley, helps out Bhuvan and his team with the rules and suggestions to play the game. Bhuvan’s team not only wins the game but also leads the Britishers’ cantonment disbanded.
