Set in a dystopian future in the year 2067, Interstellar is an epic science-fiction film that follows ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper, who is forced to become a farmer alongside his son Tom, daughter Murph and father-in-law Donald as humanity faces extinction following a global famine caused by ecocide. The catastrophic blight and famine Earth faces, compels Cooper to pilot a spacecraft and lead a crew of astronauts to travel through a wormhole near the planet Saturn in search of a new home for mankind. Directed by Christopher Nolan and co-written by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan, the film features an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, Topher Grace, Casey Affleck, and Matt Damon. The film received praise from astronomers who commended the film for its scientific accuracy and depiction of theoretical astrophysics — with Kip Thorne, a Caltech theoretical physicist and 2017 Nobel laureate in Physics, serving as an executive producer and a scientific consultant, who also subsequently wrote a tie-in book, The Science of Interstellar. The film was also praised for it's soundtrack, which was provided by legendary composer Hans Zimmer, who is reprises his role as Nolan's composer following films like 2010's Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy. Interstellar was nominated for awards in five categories at the 87th Academy Awards, winning the award for Best Visual Effects, while also receiving many other accolades.
