An American fantasy comedy that ushered the term Groundhog Day into the everyday lexicon of English-speakers and became an inseparable part of the popular culture from 1990s. The plot of the movie follows a cynical television weatherman named Phil Connors who finds himself stuck in a time loop on the February 2nd on his way to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Pennsylvania. The film was a box-office success and has become one of the most important and highly-esteemed films of the time. Groundhog Day was directed by Harold Ramis from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Danny Rubin who conceived the film's outline in early 1990s. The film stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott and was the final collaboration of Ramis and Murray's partnership history following sucesses such as Caddyshack (1980) and Ghostbusters (1984).
The film strikes a fine balance between exploration of philosophical concepts and evocative comedy. It helps launch Murray as a serious actor after his long-standing typecasting as an actor only capable of comedies. The film also managed to receive multiple award nominations and won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay.
