Gladiator, a 2000 movie, is directed by Ridley Scott, streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. It is an epic historical drama film with a gist of action and adventure, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Nielsen. The movie is inspired by the 1958 book, “Those about to die” by Daniel P.Mannix. The movie is set in AD 180 when general Maximus Decimus Meridius wants to return to his home after he leads the Roman Army to victory, whereas Emperor Marcus wants Maximus to be his successor as a regent to help save Rome from corruption. This film was also roughly inspired by the real incidents followed within the Roman Empire in the 2nd century AD. For an accurate portrayal of Roman culture, director Ridley Scott even hired several historians as advisors.
