The American science fiction comedy-drama film follows the story of an exceptional protagonist, a NDR series robot "Andrew" that is bought by the Martin family to complete menial tasks around their home. But soon, the family realises that Andrew is more than a mindless robot, but rather, a thoughtful being that inches closer to humanity by experiencing emotions and fragility. The film touches upon the themes of humanity, slavery, prejudice, maturity, intellectual freedom, conformity, sex, love, mortality, and immortality through the 200 year life-span of a robot that struggles between finding its identity and being destroyed. Bicentennial Man was originally a 1976 novelette by Isaac Asimov later repurposed as the 1992 novel The Positronic Man which was adapted in this 1999 film. The film is written by Nicholas Kazan, directed by Chris Columbus and co-production between Touchstone Pictures and Columbia Pictures and released by released by Buena Vista Pictures.
The film stars Robin Williams, Sam Neill, Embeth Davidtz, Wendy Crewson and Oliver Platt in lead roles alongside Kiersten Warren and Stephen Root. Bicentennial Man received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Makeup at the 72nd Academy Awards for makeup artist Greg Cannom's work in the movie. The film's theme song 'Then You Look at Me' was written by James Horner and Will Jennings and performed by Celine Dion.
