Veteran actress Sandhya Roy first worked with Tarun Majumder in Palatak in 1963. Throughout her career as an actress, she worked in about 20 of Tarun Majumder’s films. The duo got married in the late ’60s. On his demise, the inconsolable actress remembers her journey with the director and how he helped her to grow as an actress.
“Parents, children and spouse are your inseparable relatives. Others may come and go, but they are your pillars. Today I lost my husband. I have no means to express my grief. It is extremely painful to accept that,” the actress tells exclusively to OTTplay.
Sandhya Roy defines Tarun Majumdar as a diligent artist. “I have seen him as a diligent filmmaker and writer. In fact, he would groom young artistes with care and love. In my career, I have worked with a lot of filmmakers. I have never seen a more diligent filmmaker than him,” remembers the actress.
Tarun Majumder was also quite appreciative of Sandhya Roy’s acting skills. Out of 20 films that they worked in, several of them won awards, even at a national level. Tarun Majumdar’s 1978 film Ganadevata, also features Soumitra Chatterjee, Ajitesh Bannerjee, Samit Bhanja, Rabi Ghosh and Anup Kumar in the lead, fetched her multiple accolades. The film also won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Child Artist Award for Kanchan De Biswas in that year’s National Award. “Tarun Majumdar gave me freedom as an artiste. He trusted my acting ability and allowed me to grow. He gave me the freedom to explore my art,” Sandhya Roy recalls.
After years of togetherness, the duo parted their ways in the ’90s. They have worked in Rahgir, Kuheli, Shriman Prithviraj, Nimantran, Fuleshwari, Thagini and many other films together.
