Surbhi Jyoti, who became a household name with Zee TV’s Qubool Hai, has been relevant for over a decade now, and the fact that fans demanded and brought back the show for a second season is proof enough. While her image as Zoya from the show is etched in the memory of viewers, no one thought they would one day wake up and see their favorite star play a grey character all of a sudden. But for Surbhi, it is indeed a calculated decision as she loves playing different characters. Gunaah, which stars Gashmeer Mahajani and Zayn Ibad Khan alongside her, features Jyoti as Tara, a woman who chooses to do something bad due to circumstances. In an exclusive conversation with OTTplay, she talks about choosing the part and the parameters for playing a violent character.

Surbhi Jyoti On Playing Grey Character In Gunaah

Surbhi Jyoti and Zayn Ibad Khan sat down for an exclusive chat with us where they spoke about various topics, ranging from staying relevant to the problems in the industry to finally finding substantial work. They also discussed their process of choosing grey characters and whether they have any parameters for that. Surbhi was quick to say she has none because that is not how one decides to play any part. She also recalled choosing Qubool Hai. Read on to know more.

Talking to OTTplay, Surbhi Jyoti explained her approach to choosing the grey role in Gunaah: “There is no parameter for me. If the character is a murderer, then I cannot set a parameter. Like, you know, if he does three murders I will play her, but if he does the fourth, I will pass. No, if the character is a murderer, my point is that I am not the judge of the character I am performing. A character is written; if you are having fun reading it, you will enjoy performing it too. Just tell us yes or no. So when I heard the narration and read my character, I was so convinced, I was so thrilled and excited that I would have so much fun performing Tara, and I was sure that even the audience would enjoy watching it because they hadn't seen me playing these parts. So there was a sense of satisfaction, a sense of taking that risk and performing that character.”

Surbhi Jyoti added, “Because you can only satisfy yourself as an actor when you do something different. So I was very glad and a little selfish too that I wanted to do this character at any cost. And people are loving it. My point is that if the performance is honest, then people will love it. They are not going to judge you on why Tara did that. You can only be a heroine. Tara is a simple girl who is doing something bad because of a reason, and we all do that. We don't plan on sometimes doing things, but you end up doing things according to the situation, and even you don't know you had this in you.”

Surbhi Jyoti further spoke about how it is fun to be bad on screen sometimes and how, as actor, she has the privilege to play many lives. “As a performer, sometimes it is fun to be bad. I think that is the best part of being an actor: you get to live more than one life. I am not Zoya, but I have lived that life. And I am not Tara, but I am still living it. For me, that’s a very big plus and perk of being an actor,” she said.
