Just 10 days ago, the makers of Pippa announced that the film would be directly premiering on Prime Video, skipping a theatrical release. This announcement came after multiple back-and-forth reports of where and when the film would be released. The war-based film set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pak war talks about Captain Balram Singh Mehta, along with his siblings, who served in the 45th Cavalry unit of the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The film follows Mehta as he comes of age and proves himself in a struggle to liberate Bangladesh. It is named after the Russian amphibious war tank "PT-76," which floats on water like an empty "pippa" (tin) of ghee.
Navigating Pippa's release dilemma
Ahead of its release, in an exclusive interview with OTTplay, both Mrunal Thakur and Ishaan Khatter were asked about what was going on in their minds amid the release dilemma of Pippa. To which Mrunal exclusively stated, "Well, we wanted the film to release as soon as it could, but it takes time to make the film. There's a bit of VFX, and the score is done by AR Rahman. I mean, I was so excited. Every film has its journey, and I think the best time for the film to release is now, Diwali, where you can watch it with your family. November 10 is here, and I'm really excited that the wait is going to be worth it."
While Ishaan shared, "Earlier, Mrunal mentioned that everything's a baby, and it takes nine months, and this film is a big baby. It took a lot of work from the very beginning to get there. In the same string it continued, we thought typically that the larger part of the work is done when you finish shooting something like this, you're able to achieve it. But it took a lot of logistical planning; that's when the job really began for the makers of the film, the producers, to determine the best way for it to arrive."
A big film for a solo Diwali release
Talking about the Diwali 2023 release, the Dhadak actor went on to say, "Like she said, I think it's wonderful that we have a solo Diwali release, dhamakedaar Diwali hogi, with this film. It is a visceral film; it is a film that you have to feel, not just see. Hopefully, people will be able to get that feeling in the comfort of their own homes during a celebratory time, like Diwali, when they have time off. It's a big film; it'll be on your TV screens. So I think it's exciting, and I think it's the best time for it to come, for sure."
