The return of Anil Sharma to pop culture is one that needs to be dissected by the experts. The Gadar filmmaker returned to the big screen first with the re-release of the first film and then released Gadar 2, which took the box office by storm. The collections were so massive that he inspired an entire troop to revive iconic franchises that have made fans and a very strong recall value over the years. He came back now with a movie titled Vanvaas, starring Nana Patekar and his son Utkarsh Sharma, which, by the numbers and critical reception, seems like a misfire. The filmmaker, in an exclusive conversation with OTTplay, has now spoken about how he looks at a film's failure and that he wants to make a love story next.

Anil Sharma On The Noise Around

As confessed by Anil Sharma, the filmmaker has always tried his hands at various genres, and he wants to keep experimenting. His latest directorial Vanvaas is, for him, a homecoming or Ghar Wapsi, as he calls it. In an exclusive chat with us, the filmmaker opened up on how the world has always advised him not to make something. Some suggested he not include the hand-pump scene in Gadar 2, but then he went ahead w ith it, and the rest is history. Sharma says he has been listening to all of that for decades but does what feels right to him.

“Woh to constant hai. Yeh kahaani 1980 me bhi yahi chalti thi ki zamana badal gaya. 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020, har bar yahi suni. Mein to chaaro dashak se sunte aa raha hoon ke zamana badal gaya. Par aaj 1940 ki movie dekh lo usme bhi yahi hai ki zamana badal gaya.” (That is constant. I have been hearing people say, 'times have changed,' in every single decade of my career. Even if you watch a film from the 1940s, the conversation was the same),” Anil Sharma says.

When asked how Anil Sharma looks at all of this noise around his movies and processes it, the Gadar filmmaker said, “Jo accha bura aya uski zimmedari meri. Kal agar film accha karegi to usme sabki mehnat hai, agar kamal nahi karegi to zimmedari meri. Mera hi kuch problem hai.” (Whatever happens with the film is my responsibility. If the film does very well, it is a team effort, but if it fails to meet expectations, then it is my responsibility. Maybe I did not do something right; the problem is mine.)

Anil Sharma Wants To Make A Love Story

At this point, Anil Sharma dropped the biggest bomb. When asked if a film like Vanvaas functions as a bridge between Gadar 3 and Apne 2, the filmmaker spoke about everything that he wants to do.

Gadar 3 karenge, Gadar 3 mein abhi time hai. Par maine career shuru kiya Shradhanjali jaisi film se, ek emotional movie, a family film, to main us hi genre me vapas aa raha hoon. Mere liye Vanvaas Ghar Wapsi hai. Jaise maine Apne banayi. Mai har tarah ki films karta hoon jaise mujhe ab ek love story karni hai, woh bhi karunga.” (We will eventually do Gadar 3, but there is time for that. I started my career with a film called Shradhanjali, which was an emotional family drama; this is me going back to that genre. Vanvaas is my homecoming. Just like I made Apne, I want to work in every genre. Now I want to make a love story, and I will do that too.),” he said.

When asked what this love story that he wants to do would be like, Anil Sharma said, “Baat karenge na jab baat karenge. Ab to Vanvaas ki baat hai.” (We will talk when the time is right; right now, we are discussing Vanvaas.) When quizzed if he has a story in mind and his smile gives it away, he added, “Idea kyu nahi hai? Idea to hai lekin baat karenge.” (Of course, I have an idea, but we will talk about that later.)

It will be exciting to see what Anil Sharma announces next. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
