Thalapathy Vijay is undoubtedly one of the biggest crowd-pullers the Tamil film industry has ever had. The actor, who started his career as a romantic hero, slowly established himself as one of the leading superstars of the industry with back-to-back blockbusters over the years. Even though Vijay was widely criticized for his one-dimensional roles and uninspiring commercial potboilers for the longest time, he finally proved that he is still a seasoned actor with his stellar performance in the 2023 outing Leo.

Now, after showing his acting prowess as Parthiban and Leo in the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial, Vijay has shocked his millions of fans by announcing his decision to quit films. The popular star officially launched his political party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK Vijay) today, with an official statement posted on his social media handles. In his statement, Vijay also announced his decision to quit films, after two more projects.

Why Vijay quit films at the peak of his career?

Even though the majority of the Vijay fans are extremely happy with their idol’s decision to enter politics, cinema lovers including me, who have loved Vijay - the actor, from much before he became the 'Thalapathy', are heartbroken with his decision to quit films. The celebrated star has not just decided to quit cinema – he is bidding goodbye to the film industry at the peak of his career.

The famous actor announced his decision to shift his entire focus to politics, when cinema lovers were genuinely expecting him to play some unique roles and make some daring film choices. With his performance as Parthiban in Leo, Vijay hinted that he is now ready to adapt to the changing trends of cinema. With his extraordinary mass appeal that established him as the biggest crowd puller of contemporary Tamil cinema, the Leo actor also proved that he would soon emerge as the biggest superstar in the industry.

But now, Vijay has decided to give up everything for his political dreams. It is quite surprising that the Master actor is not really interested in exploring the vast possibilities that have opened up for him as both an actor and a superstar, as steps into his 50s. Instead, he is venturing into a highly uncharted zone. Yes, it is indeed a very daring choice. But for the Tamil cinema lovers who eagerly wait for ‘Thalapathy darisanam’ on every Pongal and Deepavali, it is just heartbreaking.

Will Vijay follow the footsteps of Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi?

While considering his grand plans and extraordinary fan base, Vijay can make it big in politics. But considering the recent political scenario of Tamil Nadu, things are quite unpredictable. Tamil cinema lovers, especially a major group of Vijay fans are still hoping that The Greatest Of All Time actor will eventually follow in the footsteps of Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi, by handling his acting career and political career together.

Vijay still has two films in store for us – the Venkat Prabhu directorial The Greatest Of All Time, and his 69th outing in cinema, which is reportedly helmed by Karthik Subbaraj and tentatively titled Thalapathy 69. Well, things might change after the 2026 elections and the crowd puller might surprise us with a grand comeback to the silver screens with his 70th film (possibly Leo 2 by Lokesh Kanagaraj or an ultimate fanboy ‘sambhavam’ by Atlee). The fans, who have always loved Vijay for his infectious charm in films like Thullatha Manamum Thullum and Kushi, and his impeccable comic timing and screen presence in blockbusters like Pokkiri and Master, will always hope for his grand comeback.
