Bappi Lahiri, the veteran singer-music director who took over the baton at the age of 17, died late Tuesday night in Mumbai. He died at the age of 69 in the Criticare Hospital, where he had been admitted for post-Covid difficulties.
The singer Bappi Lahiri's cremation will take place on Thursday morning. The family members said in a statement that the final rituals will take place tomorrow while they wait for Bappi's son, Bappa Lahiri, to return from Los Angeles.
As per reports in ANI, the doctor said in a statement that since 2021, the singer had been battling OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).
Bappi Lahiri's music, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, was all-encompassing and beautifully portrayed a wide range of emotions.
Lahiri, who was born in West Bengal, first created music for the Bengali film Daadu before making his Bollywood debut with the film Nanha Shikari. With his chart-topping music for Disco Dancer and the song Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja..., and later superhit music for Zakhmee, Lahu Ke Do Rang, and other films, he became a global sensation.
The singer-composer, who was known for his songs in various films of the late 1970s and 1980s, was a familiar face to many with his signature gold chains that he wore for good luck and his sunglasses.
Earlier, during an interview with PTI, Bappi Lahiri spoke about composing music and singing for various generations. He had said that he was very proud to have been a part of this journey and to have worked with all of the industry's incredible talent. Simply put, from Dilip Kumar to Ranveer Singh is his life and he has done everything from Dharm Adhikari to Gunday.
