Parasyte: The Grey on Netflix has sparked conversations ever since it was announced. This live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese manga series Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki, recently unveiled on the streaming giant, with all six episodes premiering on the same day. The sci-fi horror series may have ended season 1, but the promising open ending has left us with surprising cameos and a second season tease. Here’s everything you need to know...
Season 1 has no doubt a happy ending, but the special twist is how neatly the makers explore the shared universe of the manga Parasyte with the new spin-off Parasyte: The Grey. In Season 1, we witness the parasite outbreak after several mysterious larva-like creatures attack human hosts and later capture their bodies. They team up to take over humanity, and hence, humans also form a special task force called “Grey” to combat these creatures.
Episode six follows Paster Kwon’s parasite hatching a plan to rule mankind by infecting the town mayor ahead of the festival. He wickedly plans the mass killings of his parasitic teammates after he betrays them for influence and power. However, Kyung-hee (Kang-woo's infected sister), Su-in/Heidi, Kang-woo, and Choi Joon-hyung team up to thwart his evil quest.
Paster takes over corrupt cop Won-seok after he leaves Chul-min's body, and then begins the fiery and high-octane action faceoff between Heidi and him. When Choi Joon-kyung reaches the place, she has a moral dilemma: should she trust officer Won-seok or Heidi before the clocks run out of time? Pointing the gun at Heidi, she fires at the last moment by turning towards Won-seok after seeing his monstrous reflection.
Later, she keeps Su-in's mutant parasite personality a secret and tells her officers to take both Su-in and Kang-woo to get medical aid.
Shinichi Izumi, the teenage protogonist of the Japanese manga, has entered the live-adaptation universe, but he isn’t a teen boy anymore. Shinichi reaches the Grey headquarters and introduces himself as an investigative journalist who is working on parasites and their origin. He is seen lending a hand to leader Choi before the first season ends.
There is a high chance that we will be getting another action and mystery-packed series, as the last scenes clearly hint at the return. Whether it is Kang-woo and his new job in the Grey Team or Su-in's new life after she accepts the parasite’s coexistence. Heidi and Su-in's dynamic duo is explored in a letter where Heidi gives consolation to Su-in that she is not alone in this world. Grey Team leader Choi Joon-kyung has a gripping chance encounter with Parasyte manga’s Shinazi. All these lead to a promising sequel. However, Netflix has yet to officially greenlight the upcoming season.
Parasyte: The Grey is currently available to stream on Netflix.
