Premalu has emerged as the unexpected hit of this year in Malayalam cinema . The film initially lacked buzz before its theatrical release, but it has gained popularity among Malayalam cinema patrons owing to terrific word of mouth.

Judging from the trailer, Premalu revolves around a recent college graduate, who seems to be pursuing a girl, who is clearly way out of the league. Not only she is beautiful, but also she is as smart as a whip. In Premamlu, Reenu, played by Mamitha Baiju, seems to live on our own terms, while our hero Sachin, played by Naslen K. Gafoor, is an average Joe with no discernable skills.

Premalu reshapes rom-com

Premalu challenges the norm by offering a romantic comedy that not only resonates widely with the audience but also questions the traditional norms that have dictated our romantic movies for decades.

Premalu satirizes the cliched pacifying lines commonly seen in romantic movies. The often-used breakup line where a girl tells her boyfriend he will find a better partner than her is deconstructed in Premalu. Director Girish AD delves into the flip side of this sentiment, revealing how it implies the girl underestimates herself or downplays her own value to boost the boy's ego. This trope reflects problematic gender roles in movies, perpetuating the expectation that girls should downplay themselves to spare boys' feelings.

While this tradition has persisted in movies for ages, Premalu manages to expose the absurdity and outdated nature of this sentiment in a charming manner. It remains to be seen whether other filmmakers will continue to use this trope in its traditional context in future movies.

In a pivotal scene, a visibly frustrated Sachin questions Reenu, "Couldn't you have said something to make me feel better?" Reenu replies, "What?" Sachin reiterates, "That you will find a better girl than me." Her response challenges the norm, stating, "I doubt that. Because I value myself very much."

This soon-to-be iconic moment is going to find a lot of love in the meme culture of our age.

Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya celebrate Premalu success

Fahadh Faasil and Nazriya have added to the excitement by recreating this popular moment from the movie. In the video, Fahadh steps into the shoes of Sachin, while Nazriya takes on the role of Reenu. It's worth noting that Fahadh has produced the movie along with Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran.
