The year is 1985. Hindi action drama Geraftaar has been released. Featuring Amitabh Bachchan Kamal Haasan, Madhavi and others, the film had a cameo appearance by Rajinikanth. It was one of those days when superstars in the simplest manners came together for a film. A few years later, it is 1991, and the action crime film Hum has been released. Rajinikanth and Amitabh played prominent roles in the film. Both Geraftaar and Hum became commercial blockbusters and yielded massive iconic moments for Indian cinema to celebrate, so much so that it took over three decades to finally get the stars aligned.

Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth: The Holy Trinity

Yes, the year is 2024 and Amitabh Bachchan will be finally reuniting with his colleague superstars in 2024. While the trailer of Kalki 2898 AD was unleashed recently offering glimpses of Amitabh and Kamal, come October, we will get to see Rajinikanth's cop avatar sharing the screen with the Hindi actor in Vettaiyan. It took 30-odd years for these moments to come, and so has it, aligned in the same year.

When the trailer of Kalki 2898 AD was released, it became a moment of its own by uniting fans across industries. As much as Prabhas and Nag Ashwin fans from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were much enthusiastic, the Hindi cinema also contributed to the hype with the involvement of actors like Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, and finally Amitabh Bachchan. And for the fans in Tamil Nadu, it was going to be catching a glimpse of Kamal Haasan on screen after two years (since the release of Vikram). While Kamal only comes briefly in the trailer, his menacing look has almost captivated the audience and we know why. The actor not only is going to play an antagonist after so many years, but will also be featuring in one of the ambitious projects of 2024. But the cherry on the cake is still how Kalki 2898 will mark the reunion of Amitabh and Kamal after nearly four decades.

While we are still unsure what role exactly Kamal will be playing, with many speculating that it will be that of Kali, a superior power who wants to catch hold of an unborn fetus who might rule the world. With Deepika Padukone playing the expecting mother, Amitabh Bachchan plays the immortal Ashwatthama whose life mission surrounds protecting the child, owing to the curse generated after he took the life of one. It is still not confirmed if Kamal Haasan and Amitabh Bachchan will have any scenes in common but we will get to see very soon on June 27.

It is also the special year that Rajinikanth, who has adapted most of Amitabh Bachchan’s films into Tamil, will be seen sharing screen space with the latter in the upcoming Vettaiyan. Scheduled to release in October, the makers have remained guarded about Amitabh’s character which will star Rajinikanth in a cop avatar. It also comes as a pleasant coincidence that their last outing Hum too featured Rajinikanth as a police officer and served as an inspiration for the latter's one of the most iconic films Baashha.

Vettaiyan, which boasts a stellar cast including Fahad Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Dushara Vijayan, Ritika Singh and others, is directed by TJ Gnanavel. With multi-starrers being every other film to be made, it is no surprise that Rajinikanth’s film could easily attract interest from the industry and audiences alike. And as the superstars team up and light up the magic onscreen, let’s hope it’s only the beginning of many more collaborations.
