House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 5 Highlights: The world has now come to war; the Dance of the Dragons has begun, and there is no going back. The Blacks and Greens are now at war, with high chances that neither might win. As House Of The Dragon moves ahead after the tragedy of Episode 4 and the victory that came at the cost of losing Meleys and Rhaenys, we find ourselves in the aftermath. King's Landing is in chaos, and the world around it is falling apart. There is no one strong enough to fight Vhagar at the moment, defeating the mighty she-dragon who has lived for almost two centuries, seen wars, and won them with her size and strength. Now, Rhaenyra is planning to bring a competitor for Vhagar, building massive anticipation.
Episode 5 of House Of The Dragon Season 2 is mostly spent in anticipation because now you are unsure of what to expect from the war that began last week and took a massive toll. After seeing the effects of the first episode and the tragic killing, we all expected an equally thrilling aftermath in Episode 4. But Episode 5 is more about mourning in isolation and preparing for the war without really crying over the deceased for long. Winning the war is the only way to give their souls the peace they deserve. We see Aegon with his armor made of Valyrian steel melted and stuck to his skin, having suffered Vhagar’s fire.
There is now a momentary successor and no points for guessing—it is Aemond. Rhaenyra now needs to fast-track her decisions, but as Queen and the one promised the big throne, her council cannot risk sending her to the war. However, the restlessness has now gotten into her skin, and she needs to do something. "Awaken the dragon and find them the riders" is the verdict. Let's see what the episode has served, which is by far the most ‘cold’ episode of the season, and we don't mean bad in any way.
Their King has fallen, even if momentarily, having been burnt in dragon fire. A smeared head of a dragon (Meleys) has been paraded in King's Landing as the glory of Aegon, who managed to kill the traitor dragon. But little did Aemond know that this meant ill omen. Dragons are gods, some say; just meat, others say. Beliefs of the masses have been heard, their god used as a pawn, leaving them angry and scared because they know now only doom follows. People want to flee King's Landing, but the throne cannot let that happen. It will be interesting to see what this leads to because faith has been punctured, and that has never been taken lightly in Westeros if the future is to be recalled.
The council at King’s Landing now sits without a King. King Aegon II chose to fly on Sunfyre into the war without alerting anyone, and Vhagar grilled him with Sunfyre, and the two crashed to the ground. Aegon is now clearly fighting for his life and cannot be King for a while. Alicent decides to take power into her hands, now having a hint that Aemond wants to turn the throne and have Aegon dead. But the council is on Aemond’s side, and the Hand, Ser Criston Cole, is loyal to him. Aemond is now on the throne in Aegon’s absence. The game just got hotter.
All this while, we have been hating Ser Criston Cole the most and Aemond after him, but little did we know that Daemon would again develop into a man we would want to eradicate at the earliest. While his stint at Harrenhal, his visions, and the prophecy felt like he was moving towards a good end where he realized Rhaenyra is the only way, Episode 5 of House Of The Dragon Season 2 establishes that he is the same man-child still in love with the throne, and the hunger has made him into a disloyal beast.
The Queen cannot go to the war! Then what will she do? Asks Rhaenyra. Clueless about what to do while she watches one kin after the other die with their dragons, she is now restless to enter the war. She knows Vhagar is strong, and Meleys using her paws is to be thanked, but the council still looks at her as a woman first. A beautiful monologue tells us how she regrets learning the ways of being a princess but not yielding a sword. But when she is cut by a maid, she puts that poor woman in a very difficult situation. You will see.
Meleys’ death made us ask one question: who fights Vhagar from the Blacks now? Looking at Vhagar’s size, she can easily eat the existing dragons with riders for breakfast. But Dragonstone is never out of dragons. Vermithor and Silverwing have been resting for a while, and now they must be woken up. But who can ride them? Rhaenyra has found a solution. Watch the show to know.
