House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 1 - All of us at some point judged the decision to revive the Game Of Thrones template after the dramatic aftermath of the show's finale. House Of The Dragon was not just expected to stand tall as a prequel spin-off but also to be labeled worthy by the fans who were left disheartened by the finale of its predecessor. But with Miguel Sapochnik as the showrunner, season one entered our lives and bloomed into an IP that made us fly with the dragons and fall in love with the idea of Song Of Ice & Fire all over again. It was a show about the biggest house that existed, the Targaryens. It tells the story of the great house of Dragon that ruled Westeros 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born.
Season 1 captured the lives of the people then, their ways, and how complex their family structure was. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke quickly transformed from best friends to foes, and the taste of power was equally dear to both. King Viserys, played by Paddy Considine, turned out to be the most well-edged character as decay ate his body and the termites to his throne ate his family’s peace. There was so much hidden in the metaphorical layers of the show as we kept watching and discovering until the time Vhagar entered the narrative and showed us how the dragons we saw until now were not even half her size. The climax had her become the villain, and we all were waiting for the aftermath.
Enters House Of The Dragon Season 2. A season that now has the responsibility to capture the beginning of a civil war that will be fought amongst the Targaryens who now stand against each other. Created by Ryan Condal, season 2 begins amidst the tension. Lucerys’ killing has left Rhaenyra and Daemon broken, and King’s Landing is preparing for an attack from them because Alicent knows Rhaenyra will not sit quietly. Both parties are running for support. King Aegon II now sits on the Iron Throne but is supremely unfit for the job. Amid this, a massive twist leads to a death you are not even closely prepared for and the doom has just begun.
House Of The Dragon Season 1 walked with a question that was never answered until now, and that was, where are the Starks? Well, season 2 opens with the very frame of Winterfell as it prepares for a chilly winter. We are told the wall and its laws were the same even almost two centuries ago and the prophecy was relevant even then. We hear “Winter Is Coming,” and we have seen what it led to. The Starks have sworn their alliance to Rhaenyra, which makes things a lot more exciting. Considering Viserys told her the prophecy before dying and she is the only one who now knows, her coming close to the Starks becomes a very dramatic event.
A mother has lost her son to a dragon, a species she has mastered riding and connecting with. She didn't even get a conclusion to the mourning because she couldn't even see him one last time. The depression has taken a toll, leading her to abandon Dragonstone and hover around in search of her conclusion. Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra brings so much to the part because her breakdowns will make you feel her pain. She now seeks revenge because no one clearly knows what happened and Aemond is yet to tell the full story (if at all Rhaenyra chooses to believe it).
The Iron Throne now belongs to King Aegon ll, King Viserys, and Alicent Hightower's firstborn. He is not the promised heir, but Alicent has changed the game of this throne momentarily, and now Rhaenyra wants to bring order to it. But before that, it is Aegon’s weird, careless, and borderline stupid attitude that is his enemy, and House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 1 captures that pretty well. He is capable of destroying himself and the throne with it, with no knowledge of how to govern.
The metaphoric exploration of Westeros continues even under Ryan Condal. It is so good to see the writers and the creators exploring King's Landing as an architecture. For a show like this, it is very much a character, and how the symbolism continues is quite impressive. Rats are slowly but steadily eating up the fort that guards the strongest opponents at this point. When they think they are the most powerful, there is always a rodent lurking around. It looks inconsequential but is in danger.
Talking of rodents, you will see why the rats are a highlight. They enter as humans at one point and change the course of the show completely by the end of the episode. If Luke’s death shook you in season one, the creators have a welcome-back surprise for you, and you are certainly not prepared for it even a bit. The game now changes, and both parties have reasons to attack. The civil war will now shape up, and as Rhaenyra said in the trailer, ‘No One Might Win’.
