2023 has been a special year in the Telugu digital space. When compared to 2022, several OTT shows were released and made heads turn in terms of content and performances. Here's looking at the top five web series for the year 2023.
Rana Naidu - March 10, 2023- Netflix
Rana Naidu marked the OTT debut of the uncle-nephew Jodi Venkatesh and Rana Daggubati into the digital space. Directed by Karan Anshuman and Suparn Varma, Rana Naidu is one of the most trolled on Netflix. The Telugu version made headlines for the usage of cuss words mouthed by Venkatesh and Rana. Venkatesh, in particular, received a lot of hate for doing such a bold show. Though the reviews panned the show, Rana Naidu was the most-watched Telugu show ever in the history of Netflix. Rana Naidu is the official adaptation of the 2013 crime TV series, Ray Donovan. The second season of Rana Naidu will be out in April 2024 as per the update.
Save The Tigers - April 26, 2023- Dinesy + Hotstar
Mahi V Raghav's Save The Tigers was a sleeper hit in 2023. Not many knew such a show was coming out in the first place. Directed by Kakumanu, the hilarious web series was one of the most watched for its clean content and hilarious family drama. Featuring Priyadarshi, Krishna Chaitanya, and Abhinav Gomatam, Save The Tigers is about three frustrated husbands who kidnap an actress, and hell breaks loose. The shooting of the second season is on as of now in Hyderabad.
Shaitan - June 15, 2023- Netflix
The list of the top five web series in 2023 has Mahi V Raghav's name featured twice. After producing Save The Tigers, he directed a very bold crime thriller titled Shaitan. Featuring Rishi, Debiyani Sharma, and Ravi Kale, Shaitan made headlines for the bold content and extensive cuss words used in the show. The promos, scenes, and dialogues went viral and grabbed a lot of eyeballs. Mahi V Raghav narrated this series in a very gritty manner and the second season is already done with its shoot and will be out in June 2024.
Dayaa - August 4, 2023- Dinesy + Hotstar
Dayaa was one of the biggest hits of 2023. Directed by Pawan Sadineni, the series marked the debut of JD Chakravarthy in the digital space. Based on the life story of a freezer van driver, Dayaa is one hell of a thriller. Eesha Rebba and Ramya Nambeesan played the main leads in this film which also won the best director at the OTTplay Awards 2023 held in Mumbai. The stylish making and gritty performances were loved by one and all.
Dhootha - December 1, 2023- Amazon Prime Video
Last but not least, Dhootha marked the OTT debut of Naga Chaitanya and the series was directed by Vikram Kumar, who gave the Akkineni family the cult classic Manam. Dhootha is about a media baron engulfed in a series of crimes that have a supernatural element connected to it. Dhootha is a smash hit and has been trending on top on Amazon Prime Video's top ten list for the last three weeks. Naga Chaitanya's intense performance has been liked by one and all. Produced by Sharath Marrar, Dhootha also stars Priya Bhavani Shankar, Prachi Desai, and Parvathy Thiruvothu.
