The remake of Amitabh Bachchan's film Agneepath was the talk of the town after it released on January 26, 10 years ago. The film led by Hrithik Roshan also stars Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt in important roles. Though a remake of the Yash Johar directorial, it manages to create some interesting and new plotlines and characters like Rauf Lala, played by Rishi Kapoor. His kajal-laden eyes and sharp tongue as a goon and human trafficker made his performance even more authentic. Apart from impeccable performances, also by Hrithik Roshan as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and Sanjay Dutt as the main villain Kancha Cheena, the film is known for its amazing music.
The soundtrack of the film has a mix of all kinds of music including a crowd-puller item number Chikni Chameli, a groovy song Gun Gun Guna Re, a high-spirited devotional song Deva Shree Ganesha and a soothing melody Abhi Mujhe Mein Kahin. The music of the film is composed by Ajay-Atul and the lyrics are by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The music album of the revenge drama received a great response. Many consider Chikni Chameli to be the reason for the spike in the sales of the music album. The singer of the item song, Shreya Ghoshal won many awards and nominations for the song for which she changed her style of singing with a rustic flavour to the song. The song offers mass entertainment with its intrinsic and feet-tapping music and great dance performance by Katrina Kaif. The song is still played at several dance parties.
While there is a high-energy song like Chikni Chameli as part of the soundtrack, there are also extremely soothing melodies like O Saiyyan and Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin. Sung by Sonu Nigam, Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin strikes a chord with the audience in the delightful voice of Nigam. The song is a soulful composition by Ajay-Atul and boasts of poetic lyrics by Bhattacharya. The song even got the film's producer Karan Johar emotional recently at a reality show where he recalled the original film by his father and how heartbroken he was upon the failure of the 1990 drama. The song won Sonu Nigam an IFFA Award, among others for the Best Playback Singer - Male category.
O Saiyyan is another romantic and soulful song, sung by Roop Kumar Rathod. A soothing love ballad, it talks mainly of loneliness and longing. Featuring Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra, the song, sung by Rathod in his euphonious voice, is pleasing to ears.
To break the monotony, the film also features a qawwali Shah Ka Rutba, sung by Sukhwinder Singh on a high note. The song creates a powerful impact in the narrative of the film and takes the story forward, featuring glimpses of the plot being planned and executed by Hrithik Roshan. The rubab and tablas complement the high-pitched spiritual and devout song by Singh and Anand Raaj Anand and Krishna Beura.
The song Gun Gun Guna with Sunidhi Chauhan behind the mike is definite to bring a smile to your face. The happy-go-lucky song features Priyanka Chopra trying to convince Hrithik Roshan to move on in life and stay happy with the bunch of her friends is well-tuned. It brought the melodious and distinct voice of Udit Narayan back to the limelight. A beautifully worded song, it lingers in the minds of the viewers even after its runtime in the movie.
While speaking of Agneepath, one cannot miss the mention of the song Deva Shree Ganesha. It has become like a mandate to play the song at every Ganesh Chaturti pandal during the festival. The song features some larger-than-life scenes of the festival, which will leave you mesmerized. With the vocals by Ajay Gogavale, the song has a great pace and a colourful and vibrant fervour to it. The song that features towards the end of the film syncs with the mood of Hrithik's Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, who is all out to seek revenge.
One of the highlights of the songs in the film is how it takes the story forward and plays parallely to the gory scenes of action and murders. The 2012 film opened to positive reviews too and even went on to break the records of opening day sales of Bodyguard. The film collected ₹217.6 million on the first day of its release. It became a huge commercial hit unlike the original film, which did fetch Amitabh Bachchan his National Award but failed at the box office.
