WPL 2024 Final - Sophie Molineux changes tide in RCB's favour as she gets 3 wickets in 1 over

The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 Final between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was filled with every drama possible during the Powerplay. From RCB's missing the chance to run out Meg Lanning in the 1st over to Shafali Verma's aggressive batting, with the run rate soaring above 10 RPO - it was a dream run for DC.

However, following the Strategic Timeout, the momentum shifted in RCB's favour as Sophie Molineux returned for her second over and went on to claim the wickets of three batters - Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Alice Capsey in quick succession.

On the first ball of the 7th over, Molineux dismissed Shafali Verma, who attempted a slog-sweep but was caught at deep mid-wicket by Georgia Wareham. Verma departed after scoring 44 runs off 27 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes.

Jemimah Rodrigues, who had just walked to the crease, only faced a ball before she fell on the third ball of the over. She misjudged a delivery that drifted away slightly, resulting in her off-stump being knocked back. She had to depart for a duck.

Moments later, Alice Capsey strode onto the field only to walk back just as swiftly as she too was dismissed for a duck on the subsequent delivery. It was a premature lap sweep which gave Molineux the idea of her intentions. Sensing the opportunity, the bowler reduced the pace, causing the ball to veer away from Capsey and ultimately crash into her leg stump.

This crucial wicket swung the momentum back in RCB's favour, altering the course of the game significantly. As of writing this article, in 14 overs, DC has scored 87 runs and lost 6 wickets. They lost their captain Meg Lanning for 23 runs in the 10.4 over while Asha Sobhana sent back Marizanne Kapp for 8 in the 13.1 over and soon after Jess Jonassen for 3.

At the toss, DC went with the same squad after winning the toss and opting to bat first in the Final encounter. RCB made one change as they got in Sabbhineni Meghana in place of Shraddha Poklharkar.
