As Australia faced off against India in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, the battle extended beyond the players to include the spirited crowd. A massive gathering of around 130,000 people, adorned in blue, turned out to rally behind the Indian team in their pursuit of the ODI World Cup title.

However, as Australia gained control on the pitch, the crowd's enthusiasm waned and, at times, became unruly. Virat Kohli and other players were observed urging fans to maintain their cheers, a plea that ideally should not have been necessary.

A number of fans chose to exit the game early, acknowledging the unlikely victory for the Indian team in the final.

Criticism on social media highlighted the crowd's perceived disrespect towards the Australian team and match officials. Some suggested that major events should be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for genuine crowd support.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins expressed satisfaction after the match, noting that he was pleased to witness the subdued crowd.

"It was awesome, I was pretty happy that they (the crowd) were silent for a lot of the bowling innings. A couple of times, they got loud and it was really loud. But fantastic, the passion in India is unrivalled around the world. You look around and it is a pretty special moment, whatever the result happens, we are never going to forget a day like today," Cummins said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
