To say that the Wimbledon’s Women’s singles final went down to the wire would not be an understatement. Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejčíková, both playing their first-ever finale on this at this Grand Slam, were dominating forces in one set each. Krejčíková took the first, 6-2, then Paolini struck back with the same margin in the second, forcing a deciding third.

They were evenly poised at 3-3 each with each player unwilling to let slip. But then, Krejčíková managed to break the French Open runner-up and soon enough, Paolini was fighting the stay in match, warding off one championship point, then almost swinging the game her way with a possible break point, fighting yet another match, only to then gift her opponent a third when her return landed on the net. And this time, Krejčíková converted with a massive serve that Paolini had no answer to. At the end of 1 hour and 56 minutes, Krejčíková was the new Wimbledon champion, a tournament she’d never made past the 4th round earlier as a singles player.

As a doubles player, Krejčíková has very many Grand Slams under her belt and one in the singles category – she is the 2021 French Open champion. Speaking during the presentation ceremony, she said that it was unbelievable that she would make it to this stage. “I had a tough first match; I wasn’t in good shape before that with an injury. It is unbelievable that I am standing here as the champion,” she said. The win makes Krejcikova only the fourth Czech player to win the women’s title at Wimbledon, after her former mentor Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova and Marketa Vondrousova. The win, of course, was dedicated to the late Novotna.
