US Open 2024: The four women headed to the Arthur Ashe Stadium in the semi-finals have never won the hard-court Grand Slam major, perishing at quarter-final, semi-final and final stage earlier.
The US Open 2024 will have a new champ in the women’s singles category on September 8. None of the 4 semi-finalists have ever won at Flushing Meadows, although one, Aryna Sabalenka, is a former finalist. Former champions like Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu were knocked out at various stages of the tournament, setting up a Round of 4 with two who’d never played in a US Open semi before, one who did and another a runner-up. Whose name will go up as the 2024 champion?
The highest seeded player left in the tournament, Sabalenka is, in a sense a US Open champion, albeit not in singles. In 2019, partnering with Elise Mertens, she won in the doubles category, defeating Victoria Azarenka and Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. In the singles, the closest she got was in 2023, when she lost to Coco Gauff in the final. The two-time Australian Open champion, had not made it past the semis stage prior to her final loss last year. She will play Emma Navarro in the first semi-final on September 6.
The US Open 2024 semi-final is Emma Navarro’s first-time at the Round of 4 stage in any Grand Slam major. Her road to the semi-final includes wins over 2023 US Open champ Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa. The 23-year-old is a former French Open runner-up in the juniors’ singles and winner in the doubles, partnering with Chloe Beck.
*Aryna Sabalenka vs Emma Navarro at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 6 at 4.30 am (IST). Their head-to-head record is 1:1, with Sabalenka winning the most recent encounter at the French Open 2024
US Open 2024: When and where to watch final Grand Slam of the year
Pegula is fresh off a scintillating victory against World. No 1 and former US Open champion, Iga Swiatek. A first-time semi-finalist, Pegula had been beaten by Swiatek in the 2022 quarter-final, for which she has now exacted sweet revenge. She takes on Karolina Muchova in the second semi-final.
A semi-final outing has been Muchova’s best to date at the Grand Slam Majors. In fact, she lost out at semis stage at the US Open in 2023, where she was beaten by eventual champion Coco Gauff.
*Jessica Pegula vs Karolina Muchova at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 6 at 5.45 am (IST). Their head-to-head record is 1:0, in favour of Pegula.
